Tangata Threads was created with a purpose that goes far beyond fashion.

We are a wahine Māori-owned business grounded in whakapapa, identity, sustainability and the belief that what already exists still has value.

Our kaupapa is simple:

Reclaim the fibre. Restore the mauri. Respect the story.

For us, reclaiming is about more than taking a piece of clothing and giving it another life. It is about challenging the idea that everything has to be new, mass-produced and disposable.

We want to create and curate pieces that carry character, purpose and longevity.

Some pieces are reclaimed. Some are restored. Some are chosen because they are made to last.

But everything we bring into Tangata Threads has to align with who we are.

We are drawn to natural fibres, quality materials, leather goods, clothing with history and pieces that can travel with you for years rather than months.

We also believe clothing can carry identity.

It can say something about where we come from, what we stand for and what we refuse to leave behind.

As Māori, whakapapa connects us to people, whenua, stories and generations that came before us. Tangata Threads is one small expression of that connection.

We are not trying to reproduce or commercialise what is tapu, nor are we interested in putting Māori culture onto products simply because it sells.

Our responsibility is to create with respect.

That means thinking carefully about what we make, what we reclaim, what we represent and the story attached to it.

Tangata Threads is also about restoration.

Sometimes that means restoring a garment.

Sometimes it means restoring value to materials that would otherwise be discarded.

And sometimes it means something deeper — reclaiming confidence, creativity, identity and the freedom to decide what our own stories look like.

We want Tangata Threads to grow into a brand that people recognise not because we follow trends, but because we stand for something.

We are building this kaupapa between Aotearoa and Australia, carrying our whakapapa with us wherever we go and creating something that our whānau and mokopuna can be proud of.
